SEO for criminal defense lawyers

The short answer

SEO for criminal defense lawyers means showing up after an arrest, when the client or their family searches on a phone for a lawyer nearby. Get your Google Business Profile (your firm's listing on Google Maps) and its hours right first. Then build a page for each charge you defend, such as DUI, domestic violence and expungement. Most charge searches we checked are easier to rank for than "criminal defense lawyer".

We sell local SEO to law firms, so read this as a vendor's guide. Search figures are our own pull from DataForSEO, a paid keyword data service, for Google US. The numbers are estimates and shift each month.

Here we cover Google search, the map results (the map and short list of firms Google shows above the web results) and AI answers for defense firms.

What is criminal defense lawyer SEO?

It is getting a defense firm's pages and Google profile to show for arrest, charge and court searches in the counties it works in. What sets it apart is timing. Someone may search right after an arrest, on a phone, so the first screen has to work there. The next section shows how people search, and the section on night searches covers that first screen.

After-hours intake, ads and the first days after an arrest are on our Criminal defense marketing page. Firms that mostly take DUI cases should read our SEO for DUI lawyers guide, which covers the DUI searches and pages.

If your phone goes to voicemail at night, fix that before you spend anything on SEO.

How do people search for a criminal defense lawyer?

By charge, by place and by urgency, and often for someone else. The table shows the larger searches in our pull, with two more numbers for each.

Ranking difficulty is DataForSEO's score from 0 to 100. The higher it is, the harder Google's first page is to reach for that search. The click price is DataForSEO's estimate of what advertisers paid Google, on average, for one ad click on that search.

Source: DataForSEO Labs, Google US, average monthly searches, ranking difficulty and estimated click price, pulled October 8 to 12, 2026.
Search, with ranking difficulty (0 to 100)Searches a monthEstimated click price
criminal defense lawyer, difficulty 19135,000$61.33
dui lawyer, difficulty 9135,000$87.09
criminal lawyer near me, difficulty 090,500$52.82
dui attorney, difficulty 833,100$73.02
domestic violence lawyer, difficulty 268,100$69.41
california dui attorneys, difficulty 388,100$60.55
dui expungement lawyer, difficulty 05,400$163.62
federal criminal defense lawyer, difficulty 04,400$50.83
criminal defense lawyer cost, difficulty 03,600$10.59
drug possession lawyers, difficulty 03,600$40.76
expungement lawyer california, difficulty 42,400$8.12

Click prices show what a ranking is worth. A DUI firm paying around $87 a click for "dui lawyer" pays nothing per visit when it ranks for that search instead.

From the table:

  • DUI searches are as large as general criminal ones. "DUI lawyer" and "criminal defense lawyer" both had 135,000 searches a month, but the DUI search scored 9 for difficulty against 19.
  • Record clearing is a market of its own. "DUI expungement lawyer" had 5,400 searches a month, a difficulty of 0 and the highest click price in the list, $163.62.
  • People ask about fees. "Criminal defense lawyer cost" had 3,600 searches a month at difficulty 0, and a fee page can answer it.

City searches are smaller, and their click prices vary. In the same data, "criminal defense lawyer los angeles" had 4,400 US searches a month at $56.49 a click. "Criminal defense lawyer san diego" had 2,400 at $43.01. "DUI lawyer los angeles" had only 480, at $153.81, about 1.8 times the price of "DUI lawyer".

Source for the city searches: DataForSEO, Google US searches for each phrase, pulled October 17, 2026.

Los Angeles results: what our checks showed

On October 17, 2026, we ran the two searches below as a phone in Los Angeles. We ran the DUI search twice, a few minutes apart. Another day, device or neighborhood could show something different.

  • "DUI lawyer los angeles": three firms showed in the map results at the top. Directory and review sites such as Yelp, Avvo and FindLaw held seven of the first ten web results in one check, and four in the other.
  • "Criminal defense lawyer los angeles": an AI Overview (the AI-written summary at the top of some Google results) came first, then three map results. Seven of the first ten web results were law firm pages.

For the DUI city search, a small firm's site can be up against directories, and the web results changed within minutes. The map results and charge pages are where it can realistically show up.

Which pages should a criminal defense firm build?

A page for each charge you defend, plus one for record clearing if you do it. Write each one for someone who has just been arrested, or whose family member has.

Monthly searches from DataForSEO Labs, Google US, pulled October 8 to 12, 2026.

A DUI page can also explain the DMV license hearing, which the California DMV says is separate from court.[1] Our SEO for DUI lawyers guide covers the DMV clock and which DUI pages to build.

Expungement pages

On an expungement page, use the word people search for, then explain it accurately. The California courts' self-help guide says "true expungement does not exist in California" and that other options may clean a record.[2] Link readers to the courts' Clean your record page so they can check their options there.

Court pages

Write one only for a courthouse your attorneys actually appear in, with real detail about it. A page per city with only the name swapped is a doorway page (one made only to rank for a place name). Google's spam policies for web search list "pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page" as doorway abuse.[3]

Questions people also ask

Google's "People also ask" box (the related questions it shows under some results) gives more page topics. On searches about defense SEO on October 17, 2026, it listed "How to find the best criminal attorney?" and "Should I get a lawyer for first DUI on Reddit?" Answer questions like these on your own pages, in your own words.

Map results: how do you show up for "criminal lawyer near me"?

With a complete Google Business Profile. "Criminal lawyer near me" had 90,500 searches a month, and Google's help page names relevance, distance and popularity as the main factors in local results.[4]

Nobody can move an office closer to every caller. What you control is how well the profile matches the search, and the reviews behind it.

  1. Use your real firm name. Google's guidelines say "Including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted," and a profile can be suspended for it.[5] So no "DUI Lawyer Van Nuys" added to the name.
  2. Set the hours someone really answers. Google asks for your "regular customer-facing hours of operation".[6] Show 24 hours only if a person picks up at 3 a.m. How late-night family calls get covered is on Criminal defense marketing.
  3. Keep categories few. Start with the closest criminal defense category in Google's list, and add others only if they describe your core work.[7]
  4. List services by charge, in the same words as your pages: DUI, domestic violence, drug charges, expungement.
  5. Give a number you can tap to call that rings a person, not a phone menu.

Setting up the profile step by step is covered in our guide to local SEO for lawyers.

Night searches after an arrest: what should your page show?

Five things, before any scrolling on a phone. Show a number to tap, the hours you answer, the charges you take, the counties you work in and what happens on the first call. The person searching may be a parent or partner, not the client.

On the first screen of a phone, before any scrolling

  • A number to tap
  • The hours you answer
  • The charges you take
  • The counties you work in
  • What happens on the first call

Speed after the first contact matters too. In Scorpion's 2025 survey of 3,000 legal clients, 72% said they won't wait more than 24 hours for a callback.[23] Scorpion sells legal marketing and the survey wasn't limited to defense cases. For an arrest, a day is a long time, so set the call-back time you can really keep.

Say on that first screen that family members can call. Your attorneys decide what the firm can discuss with them, and Criminal defense marketing covers calls from family.

For first screens that do this well, see Law firm website examples.

If nobody picks up at night, Legal answering services compared sets out who can answer for you.

Where do criminal defense referrals come from, and how does SEO fit in?

From people who already know a lawyer or a firm: other lawyers, past clients, and the family of the person arrested. Our reading is that many of them still look the firm up before they call, so referrals and search work together.

  1. Someone passes on your nameA lawyer, a past client or a relative.
  2. The caller searches for youThey look up your firm name or "criminal lawyer near me".
  3. Your profile and page answerThe hours, charges and counties match what they were told.
  4. A person answersThe call becomes an intake, or goes to the next firm.

A lawyer who doesn't take criminal cases may pass defense work on. A clear charge page and a complete profile make it easy for them to pass your name on, and for the client to trust it.

Paying for referrals is an ethics question in California.

California defense lawyers: how many list a website?

About 42% of the 7,600 active private-practice attorneys in California who list criminal law show a website on their State Bar profile. That's fewer than in any other main practice area we counted, except workers' compensation.

City by city, the criminal law share stays low. In Los Angeles 43.4% of those attorneys show a website on their profile, and in San Francisco 37.8%. Among personal injury attorneys in Los Angeles it's 58.4%.

Attorneys choose their own practice areas, and about half leave the field blank. Some attorneys have a website but don't show it on their profile, so the true share is higher. "Solo" is our guess from the firm name, and every count is attorneys, not firms. That last column also counts attorneys who name no practice area at all.

Source: our count of the State Bar of California's public attorney directory, read August 10 to 12, 2026. Aggregates only; no attorney is named.

Our reading: a lower share of listed websites suggests many defense lawyers rely on referrals and directories. Where that holds, a firm with clear charge pages has a chance to stand out locally.

Reviews from defense clients: will they leave one?

Some will, if you ask everyone the same way after the case ends and let them use initials. Many won't want a charge linked to their name.

  • Ask once the case has closed, with the same message to every client. Google's review policy rules out picking which clients to ask.[8]
  • Offer nothing in return, not even a gift card. Under the FTC's consumer reviews rule, a business can't reward reviews written to say something good or bad.[9]
  • Tell clients a first name or initials is fine. Whether a review mentions the charge is up to them, never something you ask for.
  • Family members who hired you can review how the firm treated them. The client's case stays out of it.
  • In replies, never confirm that someone was a client and never mention a charge. California Business and Professions Code section 6068(e)(1) tells attorneys "To maintain inviolate the confidence" of their clients.[10]

Run your review-reply wording past your ethics counsel once, then use it every time.

How do AI answers pick criminal defense lawyers?

Nobody outside Google and the AI companies knows exactly. Here "AI answers" means ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.

Google says its AI features need no special format. To be eligible, a page has to be indexed, meaning stored by Google so it can appear in results. It must also be able to show a snippet, the short text under a result.[11] Meeting that bar doesn't mean Google will show it.[12]

On October 17, 2026 we checked what Google's AI Overview cited for four searches. These were single checks of each search.

  • Firm owners shopping for SEO search phrases like "dui lawyer seo" and "criminal lawyer seo". Google showed an AI Overview for both, and each one cited three agency pages.
  • For "criminal defense lawyer cost" and "dui expungement lawyer" the same day, each AI Overview cited three law firm pages.

The cited firm pages were fee pages for the cost search and expungement pages for the expungement search. So write your fee and expungement pages in plain words, and answer the question in the first lines.

Our local SEO and AI search page explains how we check what AI answers say about a firm.

Yes, but earn them and never buy them. Google's spam policies list "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as a spam practice.[24] Real links come from places that know your firm. Examples are a local bar association profile, a law school or a news story that quotes an attorney.

Ask any agency where its links come from and see the list. A pack of links for a flat fee is a warning sign, and no number of links can promise a ranking.

Advertising rules for a criminal defense website

Treat your site and Business Profile as attorney advertising. In California, these rules come up most on defense pages.

  • Rule 7.1 forbids any false or misleading communication about a lawyer's services.[13] Rule 7.2(c) says each ad must carry the name and address of at least one responsible lawyer or firm.[14]
  • Under Rule 7.4, an attorney may say they are a certified specialist only while certified by the State Bar's Board of Legal Specialization or another body the State Bar accredits.[15]
  • Rule 7.4 also says the ad must name who certified them.[15]
  • Saying the practice specializes in criminal law is allowed, as long as it isn't misleading.[16]
  • The State Bar's Board of Legal Specialization lists criminal law among the areas it certifies.[17]
  • Pages and search results reach people who are looking. Approaching people in custody, or calling people just arrested, falls under Business and Professions Code section 6152 and Rule 7.3.[18][19] What we won't do, and why, is set out on Criminal defense marketing.
  • Past case results need context. A comment to Rule 7.1 says "An appropriate disclaimer or qualifying language often avoids creating unjustified expectations."[20]

Have your ethics counsel read charge pages, results and certification claims before anything is published.

Criminal defense lawyer SEO companies: what to ask

Three questions show whether an agency understands defense work.

AskA good answerA bad answer
"Will you write a page for every city around us?"Only for courthouses your attorneys appear in, with real detail."50 city pages in the first month."
"How will you get reviews from clients who don't want to be named?"Initials, the same request to everyone, and nothing in return."We have a review network."
"What will you do about night calls?"They check who answers before building any pages."That's not our job."

We're the wrong agency for you if you want jail, booking or arrest lists, or a promised ranking. For warning signs that apply to any practice, see How to choose a law firm SEO company. If your firm also takes family or immigration cases, see our guides to SEO for family lawyers and SEO for immigration lawyers.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take for a criminal defense firm?

Usually months. LegalScapes, a firm that sells legal marketing, says the 6 to 12 month range is when most law firms see a meaningful, measurable impact.[21] That's one agency's claim, not a promise from us.

What does SEO cost for a defense firm?

There's no standard price. It turns on how many charge pages you need, how much profile and review work there is, and how many firms compete in your city. We don't publish a price. Ask any agency for a written scope before you compare quotes.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for a criminal defense practice?

Ads can start showing once Google approves them, and Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day.[22] In our data an ad click for "criminal defense lawyer" is around $61. SEO takes months and has no click cost, so you may need both while the pages grow. Google Ads and PPC for law firms covers the ad side.
