SEO for family lawyers: how divorce and custody clients find you

The short answer

SEO for family lawyers means showing up when someone near you searches for help with a divorce, custody or support case. Start with your Google Business Profile and your reviews, handle both with care for client privacy, then build one clear page for each case type you take. In our view, a small firm has a better chance with case-type searches such as "uncontested divorce lawyer" than with "family lawyer".

This guide comes from a vendor: Naelar sells local SEO to law firms.

SEO here means getting your pages and profile to show up in Google's free results. This page covers search, the map results (the map and three firm listings above the web results) and AI answers. Ads, intake and how to price the first consultation are on our Family law marketing page.

If referrals already fill your calendar, you may not need SEO at all.

What is family law SEO?

Family law SEO is getting a firm's pages and Google profile to show for divorce, custody and support searches in its area.

Family lawyer SEO and divorce attorney SEO are the same job under different names, so one guide covers both. The next section shows how those searches split by case type, place and price.

How do family law clients search on Google?

Most search by case type and place, and many search on price. Every search figure here is from our own DataForSEO pull for Google US (DataForSEO is a data service that reports Google search volumes). Treat the numbers as estimates that shift as search habits change. Here are twelve of the family searches we pulled, with the number of searches each month across the US.

Searches a month in the US, the seven biggest of the twelve

In the table:

  • Size and difficulty don't move together. DataForSEO scores "family law attorney" 0 despite 246,000 searches a month, because its score only looks at links, not at how many firms compete.
  • People search on price. "Family lawyer free consultation" gets 9,900 searches a month and "cheap divorce lawyers" gets 4,400. A page that explains how you charge answers both.
  • People search for how the process works. "Legal separation vs divorce" gets 4,400 searches a month, and a plain explainer page can meet it.

Whether to charge for the first meeting is covered on Family law marketing. For the first call itself, our free family law intake form is a place to start.

Five family searches: what one day showed

On October 17, 2026, we ran five family searches once each on a mobile phone setting, using DataForSEO's results data for Google. Read this as a snapshot of one day.

"Divorce lawyer los angeles", set to Los Angeles, opened with three family firms in the map results. Below them came firm pages, a Reddit thread, Yelp, a lawyer directory and the county court's divorce page.

The other four were US-wide checks:

  • An AI Overview (the AI-written summary Google shows above some results) showed on 2 of the 4. Both were questions: "legal separation vs divorce" and "how much does a divorce lawyer cost".
  • The two lawyer searches, "uncontested divorce lawyer" and "child custody lawyer", showed the map results instead.

Which pages should a family law firm build?

One page for each kind of case you want more of, written for the person going through it. Leave out the matters you refer to other firms, because every page brings calls for that work.

Searches a month: DataForSEO Labs, Google US, pulled October 12 and 17, 2026.
Case typeSearches clients use (a month)Page to build

To see how other firms lay out case-type pages, look at our law firm website examples.

Write each page from the questions your intake team hears, not from other firms' sites. A custody page should say what happens at the first meeting and what the parent should bring.

Don't publish child support amounts, filing fees or timelines, because they change. Link to your state court's self-help pages instead. In California that's the Self-Help Guide to the California Courts.[2]

Divorce attorney SEO and custody SEO: what is different?

Divorce searches are about the process and the price. Custody searches come from a parent who is worried about a child, so the page has to be calmer and more concrete.

The same Google profile and reviews support both. Follow the privacy rules further down on every page. Some custody and divorce callers share a phone or inbox with the other party.

Divorce attorney SEO

For divorce attorney SEO, start with the main divorce page and the uncontested divorce page. "Divorce lawyer" gets 246,000 searches a month, and DataForSEO scores it 32 for ranking difficulty.[1] Add how you charge, because many searchers compare cost before they call.

Custody SEO

For custody, build the page around what happens next. Say what the first meeting covers, what to bring and who decides parenting time. "Child custody attorney" gets 40,500 searches a month.[1]

Map results: how do you show up for "family lawyer near me"?

Through your Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows your firm in Google Maps and the map results. Google says it ranks the map results mainly on relevance, distance and how well known a business is.[3]

The three firm listings at the top of the map results are called the local pack. Searchers see a handful of facts about each firm and choose from those, so every field of the profile is part of your page one.

Drawn example of the map results for a divorce lawyer search A search box reading divorce lawyer near me, a small map with three pins labelled A, B and C, and three firm listings. Each listing shows a firm name, a star rating, a category and opening hours. The firms are made up. divorce lawyer near me ABC A Example Family Law Office 4.8 stars (112 reviews) / Family law attorney / Open until 5 PM B Sample Divorce and Custody Law 4.6 stars (58 reviews) / Divorce lawyer / Open until 6 PM C Illustration Family Attorneys 4.9 stars (31 reviews) / Family law attorney / Closed, opens 9 AM Example only: made-up firms, not a real search.

Example only: made-up firms, not a real search

Search: divorce lawyer near me

  1. Example Family Law Office4.8 stars (112 reviews), family law attorney, open until 5 PM
  2. Sample Divorce and Custody Law4.6 stars (58 reviews), divorce lawyer, open until 6 PM
  3. Illustration Family Attorneys4.9 stars (31 reviews), family law attorney, closed, opens 9 AM
A drawn example of the local pack. Each listing comes from a Google Business Profile.

Each line in a listing maps to something you control. The name, category and hours come from your profile. The stars and review count come from your clients' reviews. How close the pin is to the searcher is the one part you can't change.

You can't change distance, and prominence builds slowly through reviews and links.[22] Relevance you can fix now. For family work, relevance means the category and services match the case type searched. A firm listed as "Family law attorney" with divorce and custody services fits that search better than a general practice listing.

You can't move your office closer to every client, so put the effort into the profile:

  • Use your firm's real name. Google doesn't allow extra words such as "Divorce Lawyer Pasadena" in it, and a profile that adds them can be suspended.[4]
  • Pick the closest family law category, and as few categories as it takes to describe the work.[5]
  • List services by case type, in the same words your pages use: divorce, custody, support, restraining orders.
  • Set hours when someone can actually answer the phone.
  • Post photos of the office and the people who work there, so a nervous client knows what to expect.

Not sure your firm qualifies for a profile? See who can have a Google Business Profile and how to set one up.

Client privacy: how do you write about divorce and custody safely?

Write about the problem, never about a client, and keep anything that could identify a family off your site and your profile. Family clients often share a phone, an inbox or a home with the other party.

Case stories and results

Case stories should describe a type of case, not a person. Leave out children's ages, schools, towns and dates. If you publish a result, give it context. The comments to Rule 7.1 of California's Rules of Professional Conduct say an appropriate disclaimer or qualifying language "often avoids creating unjustified expectations".[6]

Review replies and your contact form

When you reply to a review, don't confirm the person was a client and don't mention their case. California's Business and Professions Code section 6068(e)(1) makes it a lawyer's duty to "preserve the secrets" of a client.[7] A short thank-you, or an offer to talk by phone, says enough.

On your contact form, say the firm won't text or email until the person tells you it's safe. The five questions to ask before anything is sent are on Family law marketing. Check case stories and review replies with your ethics counsel before they go up.

California family lawyers: how crowded is the market?

About 8,400 active private-practice attorneys in California list family law on their State Bar profile, and about half of them look like solo practices. We counted them from the State Bar's public directory.

8,427

Active private-practice California attorneys list family law, out of 150,671 in all.

Source: our count of the State Bar of California's public attorney directory, read August 10 to 12, 2026.

51.8%

Of those family law attorneys look like solo practices, against 22.2% of all attorneys (a lower bound).

Source: the same count. We mark a practice as solo from its firm name, which is a guess.

MeasureFamily lawAll attorneys
Attorneys8,427150,671
Website on State Bar profile55.2%35.3%
Flagged solo (lower bound)51.8%22.2%

Read these numbers with care.

  • Attorneys pick their own practice areas, if any, and only about half list one; the all-attorneys column includes those who list none.
  • Only websites shown on the profile are counted, so the real share is higher.
  • We mark a practice as solo from its firm name, which is a guess.
  • We counted attorneys, not firms.

In our view, many solo firms means many small sites chasing the same city searches. Case-type pages and steady reviews are where a small firm can stand apart.

Reviews from family law clients: how do you ask?

Reviews matter because people read them before they call. In Scorpion's 2025 survey of 3,000 legal clients, more than half said they won't choose a firm with fewer than four stars.[21] Scorpion sells legal marketing and the survey wasn't limited to family law.

Ask every client the same way, once, after the case is over, by the contact route they chose at intake. If a client said texts or emails weren't safe, ask in person or by the route they marked as safe.

  • Offer nothing in return. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews forbids rewarding a review that has to be positive (or negative).[8] Google's policy goes further and bars incentives for any review.[9]
  • Ask everyone, including clients whose case ended badly. Google's rules bar selectively asking happy customers for positive reviews.[10]
  • Accept a no without a follow-up. Plenty of people would rather not have their name next to a divorce firm's.

Expect fewer reviews than a practice where clients are glad to be named. A steady trickle over years still adds up. Check your review request wording with your ethics counsel before you send it. The rules on asking and replying are in our guide to Google reviews for lawyers.

AI answers: how do family firms get mentioned?

By answering clients' questions plainly on pages Google can already show. AI answers here means the replies from ChatGPT and Perplexity, plus Google's AI Overviews.

Google sets two conditions for a page to be shown as a link in AI Overviews:[11]

  • It must be indexed, meaning saved in Google's index so it can show up in Search.
  • It must also be eligible for a snippet, the few lines of text under a result.

Google adds no other technical steps, and meeting both doesn't promise a place.[12]

In the checks above, AI Overviews came up for questions, not for lawyer searches. Google also showed one for "family lawyer seo", a search firm owners make, in two desktop checks on October 17, 2026. Each check cited three different pages, mostly small SEO agencies.

What helps, with no promises attached:

  • Plain answers to the questions clients ask, such as separation vs divorce or what the first meeting costs.
  • Your firm's name, city and practice written the same way on your site, your profile and every directory listing.

What we do for AI answers is on local SEO and AI search.

How do you tell whether SEO is working?

Count the calls, forms and booked consultations it produces, not rankings alone. A ranking report can look fine while the phone stays quiet.

Family searches move slowly, so check the counts monthly:

  • At intake, ask each person how they found you, and record it in your case system before anything else.
  • Add one family-specific count: how many callers asked to be reached by text only, or not at all. If that number is high, your reply routes matter as much as your rankings.

Your firm should own the Google profile, analytics and call tracking, so the history stays with you if you change providers.

Advertising rules for a family law website

Your website and Business Profile tell the public about your services. In California, these rules cover what they say:

  • Rule 7.1 of California's Rules of Professional Conduct, chapter 7, bars false or misleading communications about a lawyer or the lawyer's services.[13]
  • California's Rule 7.2(c) requires every ad to include the name and address of at least one lawyer or law firm responsible for it.[14]
  • Rule 7.4 lets a lawyer claim to be a certified specialist only if certified, and only with the certifying organization named.[15] Family law is one of the areas the State Bar's Board of Legal Specialization certifies.[16]
  • Rule 7.3(f) restricts asking the person a domestic violence restraining order is sought against to hire you, until proof of service is on the court docket.[17]
  • Comment [1] to Rule 7.3 says a website aimed at the general public isn't a solicitation.[18] The rule is summarized on Family law marketing.

Check results pages, and any claim about certification under Rule 7.4, with your ethics counsel before they go live.

Family law SEO agency: what should you ask before you hire one?

A family law SEO agency should be able to answer three questions about family work, and the answers show quickly whether it understands it. The general red flags are in How to choose a law firm SEO company. If your firm also takes other case types, see our guides to SEO for immigration lawyers and SEO for criminal defense lawyers.

AskA good answerA bad answer

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take for a family law firm?

Expect months. LegalScapes, a law firm marketing agency, says most firms see a meaningful, measurable impact in 6 to 12 months.[19] That is the agency's own estimate, and a busy city can take longer.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for a family law firm?

They do different jobs, and you can run both. Ads can bring calls this month, but you pay for every click. DataForSEO estimated about $29.97 a click for "divorce lawyer" in October 2026 (Google US). SEO is slower and has no charge per click; for the pay-per-click side, see Google Ads and PPC for law firms. If you want ads running while SEO builds, see our attorney lead generation service.

Should we build pages for nearby cities?

Only for places where you take cases and can say something real, such as how that county's family court works. Google's spam policy names pages aimed at one city after another that all lead to the same place.[20]

Try this today

Three checks to run today

  • From your office, search "divorce lawyer near me" on your phone.
  • Note whether your firm shows in the map results, and what your profile's first photo and category are.
  • Check that your profile and your website show the same firm name, phone number and hours.
