SEO for DUI lawyers: what to build and why

The short answer

SEO for a DUI firm is about the days right after an arrest. The person searching may be the driver or a family member, and may hold a DMV notice as well as a court date. Build a page for each situation a caller is in, and make sure your profile hours match when someone really answers. SEO takes months, so ads can cover the gap while the pages grow.

This guide is for a DUI or DWI defense attorney who is deciding what to build first, or checking what an agency is selling. It is about the US, with California examples.

We sell local SEO to law firms too, so read this as a vendor's guide. The search figures are our own pulls from DataForSEO, a paid keyword data service, and each one is dated. Naelar is not a law firm, and nothing here is legal advice.

Why is DUI search different from other legal searches?

The clock starts at the arrest. A DUI arrest can lead to a court case and, separately, to DMV action on the driver's license. California's DMV says that when it "takes an action against your driver's license (DL) you may be entitled to an administrative hearing."[1] Those hearings are "separate from criminal hearings held in a court,"[1] and the window to ask for one is short.

10 days

"Hearings must be requested within 10 days of receiving notice or 14 days from the date of the notice if the notice was mailed."[2]

Source: California DMV, Fast Facts 26 (a general guide to DMV hearings), revised September 2026. The notice the driver gets states the deadline that applies. California only.

So the person searching may be counting days, not weeks. Other states set their own deadlines, so link your own state agency's page and do not copy a number onto your site where it can go out of date.

For your site this means three things. The phone number goes first. The page names the license hearing and links the state's own page. And the person searching may be a parent or partner, not the driver.

Do DUI, DWI and OWI need separate pages?

Usually not. One page can carry your state's word, because Google appears to count close wordings together. The table shows the main national searches. The list after it shows how the wording changes by state.

Google US searches a month and estimated click price (what advertisers paid on average for one ad click). Source: DataForSEO, pulled October 29, 2026. Estimates.
SearchSearches a monthEstimated click price
dui lawyer165,000$99.46
dui attorney27,100$70.03
dui defense attorney14,800$88.76

The same grouping shows up nationally. On October 17, 2026, "dwi lawyer" came back with exactly the same figures as "dui lawyer" in that pull: 135,000 searches a month and $87.09 a click. That is one group counted once, not two markets. The estimates also move: our October 12 pull gave "dui attorney" as 33,100 a month, against 27,100 on October 29, so treat each figure as a range.

By state, here are the searches a month in Google US and the estimated click price. Source: DataForSEO, pulled October 8 for Pennsylvania and New Jersey and October 12, 2026 for the others. Estimates:

  • Pennsylvania: "dui attorney pa" and "dwi lawyer pennsylvania", 4,400 searches each, $15.24 a click each.
  • North Carolina: "dui lawyers nc" and "dwi lawyers nc", 1,900 searches each, $26.62 a click each.
  • Wisconsin: "owi lawyers wisconsin", 2,400 searches, $45.47 a click.
  • New Jersey: "dwi lawyer new jersey", 3,600 searches, $72.04 a click.
  • Florida: "dui lawyers in florida", 2,900 searches, $86.89 a click.

Where two wordings show the identical number and click price, as in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, Google looks to be counting them as one group. That is our reading of the data, not a Google statement. Put your state's own term in the title and heading, and use the other wordings once, in plain sentences.

Which DUI pages should you build first?

One page for each situation a caller is in, not one for each city. The list shows five that fit many DUI practices. The wording of each page's legal points is for your attorneys to write and check.

  • First arrest: for the driver, or a parent or partner, in the first days. It answers who answers the phone now, what the first call covers and how fees are explained.
  • License hearing: for someone holding a DMV notice. It says the DMV hearing is separate from court, gives the deadline with a link to the DMV, and says how to reach you today.
  • Repeat or felony DUI: for someone with a prior, or a case involving injury. It says you take these cases, which courts you appear in, and what to bring to the first call.
  • Drug DUI: for someone charged after a drug test, not a breath test. It says you take these cases and how the first call works.
  • Commercial driver: for a driver whose job depends on the license. It says you handle license issues with the case, and how to reach you after hours.

This is our suggested set. The grouping is ours, not a Google rule.

Each page should open on the answer and the number to call, then explain.

Clearing an old DUI is its own search. In DataForSEO's pull of October 8, 2026, "dui expungement lawyer" had 5,400 searches a month. It had the highest estimated click price in the list, $163.62. Our guide to SEO for criminal defense lawyers covers record-clearing pages and the Los Angeles map results.

Do city pages help a DUI firm?

Only a few do, and only for courts where your attorneys appear. City searches are small next to the national ones. The largest California city search in our data had 720 searches a month, about 0.4 percent of the 165,000 for "dui lawyer".

A page for a place with only the name swapped is a doorway page. Google's spam policies list "pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page" as abuse.[3] Write a county or city page only when an attorney of the firm appears in that courthouse and you have real detail to put on it.

What changes for night and weekend calls?

Your Business Profile hours and your phone have to match the times people search. Google asks you to "provide your regular customer-facing hours of operation."[4] Show 24 hours only if a person picks up at 3 a.m.

The first step when we start with a firm is a call check. We call after hours too, fill in the forms like a new client and write down what happens. You can run a small version tonight.

The 10 p.m. test

  • Search "dui lawyer near me" on your phone after 9 p.m. and note whether your firm shows in the map results.
  • Read what the listing says about opening hours. Does it match when someone answers?
  • Tap your number from the listing. Write down who answers and how long it takes.
  • If it goes to voicemail, check that the message names the firm, says when you call back and gives a second route, such as a text or a form.
  • Check that DUI is in the services list on your profile, in the same word your DUI page uses.
  • Open your DUI page on the phone. Is the number tappable before you scroll?
  • Send the contact form and time the reply.

If nobody can answer at night, fix that before you spend on SEO. Legal answering services compared sets out who can pick up for you, and our criminal defense marketing page covers after-hours intake.

Can a DUI firm ask clients for reviews?

Yes, if you ask every client the same way once the case has closed, and offer nothing in return.

The FTC's reviews rule bars a business from giving "compensation or other incentives in exchange for, or conditioned expressly or by implication on" reviews that express a particular sentiment.[5] A review shows the reviewer's own Google name, so some clients will not want to leave one. Tell them a review can describe the service without mentioning the charge.

Our guide to Google reviews for lawyers has the full routine. Run your reply wording past your ethics counsel once, then use it every time.

Should a DUI firm use SEO or ads, and what does a click cost?

Ads start sooner and SEO has no click cost, so you may want both. Google says "most ads are reviewed within one business day."[6] The chart shows what an ad click for the main searches has cost advertisers on average.

City searches can cost more. "dui lawyer san diego" had an estimate of $145.14 a click on October 17, 2026. At those prices, track what each call becomes. Our cost per signed case guide shows how, and Google Ads for law firms covers the ad side.

Google Local Services Ads are a third way to appear for these searches. Our Local Services Ads guide covers how they work.

Yes, but earn them and never buy them. Google's spam policies list "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as a spam practice.[8] Real links come from places that know your firm. Examples are your local bar association, a law school or a news story that quotes an attorney.

Ask any agency where its links come from and see a list. A pack of links for a flat fee is a warning sign, and no number of links can promise a ranking.

How long does DUI SEO take, and what should you ask an agency?

Usually months. LegalScapes, a company that sells legal marketing, says "the 6 to 12 month range is when most law firms experience meaningful, measurable impact from SEO efforts."[7] That is one vendor's view, not a promise from us, and nobody can promise a ranking.

On October 29, 2026, every one of the first 19 web results Google showed us for "dui lawyer seo" came from a company selling marketing or software to law firms. Five questions show whether an agency understands DUI work. Our guide to choosing a law firm SEO company has the questions that apply to any practice.

Questions people ask

Should the page say DUI, DWI or OWI?

Use the word your state uses in the heading and the page title, and the other wordings once in the text. In our October 2026 data, close wordings in Pennsylvania and North Carolina showed the same volume and click price, so one page can serve both.

Do I need a page for every county?

No. Write a county or city page only for a courthouse where your attorneys appear, with real detail about it. Google's spam policy names pages for regions or cities that funnel users to one page as doorway abuse.[3]

How much does SEO for a DUI firm cost?

We do not publish a price and will not guess one. Ask any agency for a written scope. Our law firm SEO cost guide explains what drives a quote.

Can SEO replace ads for a DUI firm?

Not at first. SEO takes months, and ads can start sooner, so you may need both while the pages grow.

Who is this guide not for?

This guide is not for you if you want a promised ranking, or lists of people who were just arrested. We do not offer either, and our automations never call or text people who have not contacted the firm first. If you want help with local SEO and AI search, that is our local SEO and AI search service. The firm owns its accounts, and nothing is built or published without the firm's sign-off.

Try this today: list your DUI pages

It takes about half an hour and needs only your own site.

  1. Open your site and list every page that mentions DUI.
  2. Next to each, write which of the five situations above it answers.
  3. Mark the pages where the phone number is tappable before you scroll.
  4. Write down the first situation with no page. That is the first page to build.
